Painting the Glorious Palette of Tuscany
September 2 - 9th, 2012
Capture the colors of Tuscany in this small group* workshop with Evelyn Dunphy at Castello di Spannocchia. Accommodations are in the Villa or the Frattoria, in the Castello. Workshop participants will have a choice or rooms, depending on whether they want single or double occupancy. This choice will determine the total cost for the workshop.
*There are five places left in the workshop.
Castello di Spannocchia is a rustic and beautiful 1100 acre organic farm nestled in the Tuscan hillside, twelve miles from Sienna. The atmosphere is friendly, comfortable and informal. The kitchen embraces the slow food mission of local, organic meat and produce. Our eyes and our brushes will delight in the rustic structures of the main castle and its gardens as well as scattered villas, hidden ruins, vineyards and olive groves. All of this estate offers a wealth of painting opportunities.

• Room and Full Board, including lunch – your choice of room in the Villa or the Frattoria.
Spannocchia serves a 4-course

Description of Painting Workshop
A plein air watercolor workshop that will engage your senses, move your painting to a higher level of personal expression and provide you with as much personal attention as you would like. The class will paint each day at one of the beautiful locations on the property. Imagine the choices: the ancient walls of the Villa and Fattoria, the acres of organic farm gardens, the hills and vineyards, or the Villa flower garden. Watercolor is the perfect medium to express the light and atmosphere of this lovely place.
Plein air painting is exhilarating, and challenging! This workshop will teach you how to simplify shapes, exaggerate your passion, minimize the unessential, crop, compose, and build a strong composition that enables you to enjoy seeing pigments mix and dance on your paper. Be a poet rather than a reporter, paint light and color, and shadow, and develop your ability to really “see”.
Each day will include demonstrations; both of the subject matter chosen for the day, and also of specific issues that students may encounter
. Evelyn comments that
“my intention is to expand the student’s vocabulary of watercolor techniques so that they are able to paint their personal statement of what they see and feel about a specific location”.
There will be an opportunity for students to sign up for a traditional Tuscan cooking class on one day from 9:00 – 2:30 including lunch. There is an additional fee for this course. Students have the option to participate in other activities on any day of the workshops if they prefer. A day trip to Siena (just twelve miles away) and San Gimignano is also an option. The instructor will be teaching every day of the workshop for those who want to concentrate on painting.
“If you want a workshop with a talented, dedicated teacher who is also a beautiful painter, sign up with Evelyn Dunphy”. A student at a recent workshop at Frederic Church’s camp on Millinocket Lake, Maine.
“I am just now realizing how much I learned from you during the workshop at Milford House. Things that I thought I knew, but really did not understand have come to life to me, and my work shows it”. A student in a recent workshop.
